The world of modding on the PlayStation 5 has taken another step forward with the release of UMTX2UMTX2, a new jailbreaking tool that exploits umtx vulnerability to allow unauthorized code execution on the console. This project, hosted on GitHub at https://github.com/idlesauce/umtx2, is the result of the collaborative work of several developers and researchers, who have combined their skills to carry out the project.

The Bases of the UMTX2 Project

The exploit code is largely based on the Lua implementation developed by Shahrilnet and n0llptr, available in the remote-lua-loader repository. This code has been adapted and improved to run on the PS5, leveraging the umtx vulnerability to gain access to the system.

The UMTX2 project is also based on previous works by SpecterDev and ChendoChap, which laid the foundation for the PS5 jailbreak through the PS5-UMTX-Jailbreak project (https://github.com/PS5Dev/PS5-UMTX-Jailbreak/). These efforts have made it possible to better understand the dynamics of the PS5’s operating system and to develop more advanced tools for modding.

Main Features of UMTX2

  • Firmware Support 1.00-5.50 : UMTX2 is compatible with a wide range of PS5 firmware, making it accessible to many users.
  • Payload Menu : The project includes a menu for payload management, which simplifies the execution of custom code on the console.
  • PSFree 150b integration: UMTX2 uses PSFree 150b of abc, a well-known instrument for performing exploits on PS5.
  • Self-loading of the ELF Loader: The project includes the automatic loading of the ELF loader developed by ?john-tornblom, which allows ELF files to run on the console.
  • Compatibility with Older Payload: UMTX2 also includes the 9020 ELF loader, which ensures compatibility with older payloads (not available in Webkit-only mode).
  • Webkit-only Mode: For users who want to send payloads and clear the app cache without a full jailbreak, a Webkit-only mode is available.

Hosting and Accessibility

The UMTX2 website is hosted on CloudFlare Pages at https://umtx2.pages.dev/. In addition, there is an average package (pkg) that allows you to directly open the PS5 browser at the address of the site: https://umtx2.ps5browser.pages.pages.dev.pages.devkg.

For those who prefer to use GitHub Pages, the site is also available at https://idlesauce.github.io/umtx2/, with a corresponding media package for the PS5 browser: https://umtx2.ps5browser.pages.dev/umtx2.github.pkg.

Thanks

The UMTX2 project would not have been possible without the contribution of numerous developers and researchers. A special thanks goes to Shahrilnet, n0llptr, SpecterDev, ChendoChap, abc, and john-tornblom, as well as all those who worked on the umtx and psfree exploits.

Conclusions

UMTX2 represents a significant step in the PS5 modding world, giving users the ability to explore new features and customizations on their console. However, it is important to remember that using jailbreaking tools can violate Sony’s terms of service and involve risks such as ban from the PSN network or consul corruption. It is therefore advisable to proceed with caution and to inquire appropriately before using these tools.
